Previously known as Jesselton while under the British colonial rule, Kota Kinabalu is a coastal city partly surrounded by the rainforest. This city is known for its bustling markets, beaches and Kota Kinabalu City Mosque. It is the gateway to the famous Kinabalu National Park which is home to Mount Kinabalu at 4,095 meters high.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kinabalu National Park

Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site covering 754 square kilometers, Kinabalu National Park has more than 5,000 plant species and approximately 90 lowland mammal species. Its main attraction is none other than Mount Kinabalu, one of the highest mountains in South East Asia at approximately 4,100 meters high. The two day return trek to the summit of the mountain is sure to challenge intrepid climbers.

Poring Hot Spring

First developed by the Japanese during World War II, the hot spring’s minerals help improve blood and lymphatic circulation for better skin and health. Rejuvenate yourself and take a dip in its waters to relieve your muscles and aches.

Kota Kinabalu City Mosque

Floating on a man-made lagoon at Likas Bay, the mosque’s design is similar to Madinah’s An-Nabawi Mosque in Saudi Arabia with its gold and blue domes like those typically found in the Middle East.

Chinese Temple

Built in 1980, the Puh Toh Tze Temple is a Buddhist temple with traditional Chinese roofing and structure. Ten large statues of deities adorn the temple, with the Goddess of Mercy, Kwan Yin, standing at the main entrance of the temple.

Filipino Night Market

Located along the waterfront in Kota Kinabalu, a myriad of stalls sell fried noodles, fried snacks, cooked seafood and much more. The wet market offers a variety of options including big yellowfin tuna, sharks, stingray, puffer fish and spanner crabs. Fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs can be found at the dry market.
