Chiang Mai is nestled into the foothills of northern Thailand and is home to hundreds of temples including Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. These temples are adorned with mirrored mosaics, bells and gabled rooftops that soar upward as if in communication with the heavens. Places of interest include the night safari, limestone caves, snake farms, national parks and many more.

Chiang Rai has outstanding natural beauty that include the ruins of ancient settlements, Buddhist shrines and mountains. This is the location of the Golden Triangle, the former center of the world’s opium trade. Be sure to visit Wat Rong Khun, Phu Chi Fa Forest Park, Oub Kham Museum and Kok River.

HIGHLIGHTS

CHIANG MAI

Doi Suthep Temple

This temple is located near the top of Mount Suthep. Visitors must walk up the 300 steps to the temple with its intricately carved mythical serpent (known as a naga). The temple houses pagodas, shrines, statues and a museum with features drawn from Buddhism and Hinduism.

Elephant Nature Park

This is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center that provides a natural environment for elephants. Set in a natural valley and bordered by a river, this nature park is a sanctuary for other endangered animals. Observe the elephants up close as they go about their daily activities.

Orchid and Butterfly Farm

Sai Nam Phung Farm is the largest orchid farm in the city where visitors can enjoy year-round blooms. Special butterfly enclosures have been built for you to see tropical species of butterflies in a natural environment. Here you can also buy jewelry with gold plated orchids and insects.

CHIANG RAI

Golden Triangle

Derived from the meeting of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, the Golden Triangle was known as an opium and heroin producing area. A must-visit is the Hall of Opium which exhibits the 5,000 year old history of opium around the world and in the region.

Wat Rong Khun

Also known as the White Temple or the Taj Mahal of Thailand, this temple is white to symbolize the pureness of Buddha. It features modern artwork and murals from national artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, that depict Buddha’s teachings, superheroes, movie stars and cartoons.
