Kota Bharu in Kelantan is the main gateway to Perhentian Island and its cottage industries produce silverware, textiles, kites and brass work. Visit Siti Khadijah Market to find a variety of fruits and vegetables or take a tour of the Old Royal Palace, the official residence of the Sultan of Kelantan during the 19th century. One of the unique must visit places in Kota Bharu is the Beijing Mosque with its temple-like architecture that incorporates Indian and Uzbek designs.
Named after Prophet Muhammad’s wife, who is known for her entrepreneurial skills, this local wet market is mostly run by women. Here you can find a variety of fruits, vegetables, desserts and much more.
Also known as the Jubli Perak Sultan Ismail Petra Mosque, this temple-like structure features a green pagoda-style roof and tall minaret inscribed with the names of all 25 prophets.
The official residence of the rulers of the state of Kelantan during the early 19th century, this palace was used until 1840. Its close proximity to the river meant that it was prone to flooding. Thus a new palace was built further inland to replace it.
Built in the 1730s, this mosque is believed to be the oldest in the region. A group of missionaries who survived a life threatening ordeal out at sea decided to build this mosque at the place where they landed safely.
