Since the 1970s, Mabul Island has been a fishing village until it became popular to divers in the 1990s due to its close proximity to Sipadan Island. It has gained its own recognition as one of the best muck diving sites in the world (limited visibility dives at shallow sites with sandy bottoms). This is a great opportunity for divers to see unusual and sometimes exotic marine life that make their home in the sediment. These include the leaf scorpion fish, dwarf lionfish, stonefish, nudibranch, anglerfish and blue-ringed octopus.
Mabul Island’s reefs are on the edge of the continental shelf and the seabed surrounding it slope out to 25 or 30 meters deep. Well known diving sites include Eel Garden, Artificial Reef and Seaventure Platform. The Artificial Reef is constructed from man-made wooden frames in the shape of pyramids, crates and rock piles. Here you will find large schools of barracuda, batfish and harlequin sweetlips. Seaventure Platform is a converted oil rig located in calm waters with little current, allowing you to take your time to explore and see moray eels and ghostpipe fish. As the name suggests, Eel Garden is the perfect place to see blue ribbon eels and rare lemon colored morays as you go into the small lairs and tunnels.
You can dive in Mabul Island year-round with the best conditions occurring outside of the monsoon season (December – March). The best time to dive is between March and September.
