Established in 1938 as King George V National Park, Taman Negara was renamed the National Park after Malaysia gained independence in 1957. This virgin rainforest is 130 million years old and is the perfect place for jungle trekking, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, camping and wild life viewing. One of the most popular ecotourism destinations in Malaysia, this park is home to the Asian elephant, tigers, leopards, rhinos and many more. Its flora and fauna include the luminescent fungi, orchids, two-toned ferns and the giant rafflesia.
This is the world’s longest canopy walkway at 530 meters long and 40 meters high. Initially built for research purposes, it is now open to the public to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the rainforest from above. The walkway can be reached by boat or if you are feeling more adventurous, you can trek the 1.2 kilometers to reach it.
Get on a wooden boat and ride through seven rapids along Sungai Tembeling. Be prepared to get wet as you start from Kuala Tahan jetty all the way to Kuala Terenggan vice versa. This fun-filled activity is sure to have you coming back for more.
Taman Negara is one of the best places to go jungle trekking in Malaysia. There are many trails to choose from, with the most popular being the one leading to Bukit Teresak. This 1.7 kilometer hike takes 30-45 minutes to reach the peak. From atop a height of 334 meters, enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of Gunung Tahan and the rainforest canopy through the hills and valleys.
This is the best way to observe and discover nocturnal wildlife; watch as the rainforest comes alive at night. If you are quiet enough, it is common to spot reindeer, tapir and wild boars from the hides strategically located around the park. These hides are camouflaged shelters used to get a close view of wildlife. They face the salt lick where many animals regularly visit to consume clay to fulfill their dietary intake of nutrients and minerals.
